ANAM Vision and Core Objectives

Vision
The ANAM vision is to be the national centre of excellence for the further development of young musicians with outstanding talent, capability and dedication, and who aspire to significant national and international performing careers.

There are three guiding values that underpin commitment to the ANAM vision:

  1. A commitment to musical performing excellence.
  2. An obligation to young musicians of outstanding talent and dedication, wherever located, and whatever their economic resources, to support the development of their skills.
  3. A commitment to national leadership in the development of Australia's music performance training.

Core Objectives
The core objectives that guide ANAM are outlined in the Annual Funding Agreement between ANAM and the Commonwealth Government. These are that ANAM:

  1. Contribute, at the most advanced level, to the education and experience of Australia's most gifted young performing musicians.
  2. Provide these musicians with the very best opportunities for learning, with exceptional musicians and music educators from Australia and abroad.
  3. Develop a national centre for musical performance at the highest level which enriches the existing resources of Australia's music teaching institutions

What is ANAM, and Why is it Unique?

The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) supports exceptionally talented young musicians in their pursuit of excellence in performance. The Academy offers a unique program involving constant interaction with internationally recognised artist/teachers providing a high benchmark against which its students can develop their skills. Opportunities for various levels of performance are offered from friendly ‘try-outs’ and performance forums to lunch hour performances and formal evening concerts. Where possible, Academy Musicians also have the opportunity of performing with the Academy’s extended Faculty and Visiting Artists. There is an emphasis on individual growth through individually tailored programs. ANAM does not offer degrees or diplomas. There are no examinations, only performances. Continual feedback from Visiting Artists, Principal Teachers, Faculty and peers allows Academy Musicians to develop and hone their critical skills.

ANAM provides an environment in which young musicians are enriched by some of the world’s most vivid musical imaginations. Academy Musicians are exposed to a variety of opinions and ideas, all focussing towards their development and pursuit of an individual musical voice. ANAM’s intake in 2006 is limited to less than 45 young musicians who have been chosen as a result of highly selective national auditions. Having a small group of high achievers enables ANAM to provide a high level of attention and support to each individual student.

ANAM is able to offer scholarships on a needs basis to Academy Musicians who are Australian Citizens or who have Australian Residency status.

The length of a student’s stay is open ended and can be anywhere between six weeks and three years. The Academy’s extended Faculty is comprised of performing musicians whose livelihood is not primarily derived from teaching. Academy Musicians are therefore accepted solely on merit and not in order to fulfil a quota of places.

ANAM offers a rigorous program addressed to preparing young musicians for all aspects of professional life. The strength of its program is in its ability to maintain a relatively small intake so as to be flexible to the needs of each individual student. Academy Musicians are given lessons by some of the finest musicians in the world, concerto performances with orchestra and tuition in chamber music.
